Senior management is responsible for ensuring that adequate resources are in place to implement this policy and that it is reviewed regularly to remain suitable, sufficient, and effective.

Legal Responsibilities

Gardeners Brent Park will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry guidance applicable to gardening, grounds maintenance, and related outdoor services. We will monitor changes in legal requirements and adjust our procedures, training, and working practices as needed.

Roles and Responsibilities

Management is responsible for maintaining this policy, setting standards, providing training, and ensuring that appropriate equipment and personal protective equipment are available and properly maintained.

Supervisors are responsible for implementing safe systems of work on site, carrying out or monitoring risk assessments, briefing team members, and ensuring that control measures are followed at all times.

All employees and contractors must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must cooperate with management, follow instructions, use protective equipment correctly, report hazards or unsafe conditions, and refrain from interfering with safety equipment.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before starting work, appropriate risk assessments will be carried out to identify potential hazards associated with gardening tasks, tools, machinery, substances, and site conditions. These assessments will consider, as a minimum, manual handling, slips and trips, working at height, use of mechanical equipment, exposure to noise and vibration, and contact with plants, soils, and wildlife.

Control measures and safe working procedures will be developed and communicated to all relevant staff. Where necessary, site-specific briefings will be given so that teams understand particular hazards such as uneven ground, ponds, water features, restricted access, or public areas.

Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered machinery such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, strimmers, blowers, and other mechanical tools. Manufacturers instructions and safe operating procedures must be followed at all times.

Personal Protective Equipment

Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided as necessary to manage residual risks that cannot be controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing, and respiratory protection where required.
